For decades, ecologists have leaned on the idea that humans act as “super-predators”, triggering fear responses in wildlife just by showing up. But a new meta-analysis pulling together 30 years of research on foraging, vigilance and movement suggests the picture is a lot messier than that. Not every human activity lands the same punch.

The clearest effect came from lethal activities like hunting: animals in affected areas became noticeably more alert and cut back on foraging, exactly what you’d expect from something actively trying to kill them. Taken together, the findings broadly support what’s known as the risk allocation hypothesis, the idea that animals calibrate their fear to match the actual threat level rather than treating all humans as equally dangerous. Published in Ecology Letters, the analysis stops short of nailing down exactly why the magnitude and variability differ so much between these categories, but it makes one thing clear: lumping all human presence into one “scary” bucket doesn’t hold up.
